RBMA 2014 season kicks off on Wednesday, 1/15 & goes until 3/18! Apply now for a chance to go to the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo!!! Details on this “life-changing” opportunity below…

RBMA_2014_Overiew

Today’s the day.  January 15th, the first day you can apply for the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo.  I tell people it’s the closest thing to a real-world musical scholarship you can get.  Lectures by legends, collabs with some of the best talent in the world, shows at nights, access to multiple dream studios worth of equipment, in a foreign country, on Red Bull’s dime?  Yeah, that’s what I’d call a seriously great opportunity and like all scholarships and great opportunities, there’s an application process that’s a little more involved than just answering 5 minutes worth of questions.

With that said, if you’re serious about the music you make, play, sing, rap, etc, take a minute to head over to RedBullMusicAcademy.com to get the 2014 RBMA application and more details on everything involved.  Over the last few years, artists like Aloe Blacc, Oddisee, Ta-Ku, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawk, Tokimonsta have applied, been accepted and have gone as far as to say “it changed my life”, amongst other rave reviews.  You can apply until March 18th, but take it from someone who’s applied before, the last thing you want to do is not get started until then (trust me, you want to check it out now).  Good luck!!!

Check out Various Assets 2013, a compilation of music created at the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy in New York, featuring the likes of Dam-Funk, Thundercat, the 62 different artists from all over world who applied to the Academy and were accepted & more.  It’s a double CD worth of material that will give you a taste of all the varieties of that get involved at RBMA every year.

Below you can catch links to a dozen of my favorite in-depth lectures featured at RedBullMusicAcademy.com to give you a taste of how deep the learning goes, but make sure to check out the site for hundreds more and RedBullMusicAcademyRadio.com for thousands of podcasts, live shows, interviews & more.

Also, stay tuned for What Difference Does It Make?, the 15th anniversary RBMA movie and For The Record: Conversations With People Who Have Shaped The Way We Listen To Music, the 400-page Red Bull Music Academy book; both of which are coming soon.  I’ll be posting a few different ways for you to get a copy of For The Record shortly, so stay tuned for details on that.

fortherecord_page2For The Record

The Red Bull Music Academy is creating the future of music by bringing the vanguard of the industry together. In the book For the Record, the leaders shaping the current musical landscape offer their insights on today’s most relevant topics and how they will affect the evolution of music production.

For the Record includes conversations between luminaries such as Nile Rodgers and Martyn Ware—the forces behind some of the biggest tunes in disco and pop from the likes of Chic, Daft Punk, David Bowie, Madonna, The Human League, and Heaven 17—who compare notes on the best way to create chart-topping hits. Erykah Badu, one of neo-soul’s defining voices, shares career advice and psychedelic wisdom with up-and-coming New York rap duo The Underachievers. DJ Harvey and Ben UFO, two different generations of DJs, talk about the good old days, the present day, and the uncertain future of selecting records for a living. Jamaican visionary Lee “Scratch” Perry is paired with UK dub producer Adrian Sherwood. Those familiar with Perry’s unique worldview will not be disappointed by this surprising and funny conversation.

More About This Book

In a similar fashion, For the Record also explores the topics of live performance, instruments/interfaces, conceptualism, drumming, rhythm, and many more. Together with stunning visual design by Chris Rehberger’s Double Standards agency, the results make for one of the most insightful publications on the current state of music and the music industry.

About the Academy

The Red Bull Music Academy is a world-traveling series of music workshops and festivals—a platform for those who make a difference in today’s musical landscape. The Academy began back in 1998, and has been traversing the globe ever since, bringing together producers, vocalists, DJs, instrumentalists, and all-around musical mavericks to shape the future of music. It has already made stops in Berlin, Cape Town, São Paulo, Barcelona, London, Toronto, New York, and beyond. If you can imagine a place that’s equal parts science lab, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and Kraftwerk’s home studio, you’re halfway there.

What the Press Have Said About the Academy

“The annual Red Bull Music Academy electronic music symposium lets its students hone their talents, access studio equipment, and learn from the best in the business.”  The Guardian

“For music fans, it is a cornucopia.”  The New York Times

“Inspiration Overload”  The Wall Street Journal

Many thanks to Red Bull Music Academy for the shout in their new book, For The Record! It’s an honor!!! P.S. RBMA 2014 in Tokyo coming soon…

Big up the homie Scuba for sending me this pic and letting me know my name was mentioned in the incredible new RBMA For The Record book (as “Justin Green”, my government)!  Red Bull Music Academy is one of the best forces in the modern music scene and it’s been an honor to work with them over the years, so seeing something like this is just the icing on the cake.

Anyway, you should probably check it out.  Okayplayer called it their #1 must buy Black Friday item a few weeks back and said this, “1. For The Record coffee table book from Red Bull Music Academy: You are already familiar, perhaps, with Red Bull Music Academy’s steez. They have now translated that steez into a deluxe coffee table book: “a collection of conversations between 36 of music’’s true masterminds.” That list happens to include a who’s who of music-creators we are actively obsessed with here at OKP, including (but not limited to Erykah Badu, Nile Rodgers, Metro Area, Lee “‘Scratch”’ Perry, Just Blaze, Buraka Som Sistema, Sly & Robbie, Paul Riser (of Motown)…& more!  For The Record went on sale Monday in the U.S. for $39.95 in certain specialty bookstores, music shops and in the Gestalten online shop.”

P.S.  RBMA 2014 is right around the corner, head over to RedBullMusicAcademy.com to get more info on the 2014 Academy in Tokyo, Japan!

The Solution is on Instagram & we’re adding an official photographer to the team! Introducing Armando aka Knower Of The Ledge!!!

If you’ve been following the party for a decent amount of time, you know that we rarely add anyone to the team.  Over the years, the party’s roster has included resident DJs Low Key, Lazy Eyez & Sounds Supreme, official/infamous bartender Jessica and the young homies DJ Dozen & B-Money during The Solution Boulder’s short run (also, huge shouts to honorary members like the cats at Family Affair, Akomplice & Denver Frank).

On that note, we recently made a HUGE addition to the team that we’re excited to announce and his name is @KnowerOfTheLedge aka Armando aka the first official Solution photographer!  He’ll be documenting all of our fun times at the party, and he’s already off to a great start. Take a quick minute to head to his Instagram page to get familiar with his work and see why he’s one of our favorite photographers in Denver, then head over to our Instagram page at @DenverSolution to see what we’ve been up (make sure to follow both, obviously)!  Also, make sure you check out even more great party pics from Armando in the galleries on our Facebook page!!!

The Solution…Every Friday night at The Meadowlark…Here’s what they say about us…

“Every Friday night at the Meadowlark, The Solution lives up to its tagline, “The best in hip-hop and a whole lot more.” DJ Low Key and Lazy Eyez have crafted an event that lives comfortably inside the realm of quality hip-hop, and still manages to always incorporate artists and records that are mere relatives of the genre. The flawless blend of music packs the dance floor with the eclectic mix of attendees, the DJs are consistently the cream of the damn crop, and every once in a while one of your favorite national artists will slide through with the intimate performance of a lifetime. If you’re sleeping on this one, it’s time to wake the hell up.” – HipHopRollCall.com

“The best hip hop night in Denver” – DearDenver.net

“At this point, the Solution is well on its way to becoming a Denver institution. But it isn’t just our town’s longest-running and most revered hip-hop night — it’s also a testament to quality and resilience. Despite having moved virtually all over town since it was founded half a dozen years ago by DJ Low Key and DJ Sounds Supreme, the Solution continues to draw a faithful crowd wherever — and however — it goes. Even after the Solution took a hiatus from weekly parties, the Solution crew continued to offer showcases featuring a parade of the best local MCs and producers, along with lauded acts from elsewhere. And last month, when the Solution returned to a weekly format at its new home at The Meadowlark, all was right in the cosmos again.” – Westword

SUNDAY, 5/5 at 3PM -> It’s here!  Goodness w/DJ Low Key & friends, my Summertime party on the Meadowlark’s beautiful patio is back for the 2013 patio season!!!  Last year, Goodness got off to an unbelievable start, with a ton of great people, top notch music, refreshing, delicious tacos & assorted randomness coming together like magic every weekend.  Now we’re back for 2013 and kicking things off with an all-star DJ lineup including world renowned DJ Chris Karns, underrated Lipgloss resident DJ Largechild, Welcome To The D.O.P.E. Game’s DJ Dozen & myself.

On the food tip, El Chingon and Chef David Lopez (aka DJ Psycho), who did tacos for us last year, are opening their new location at 44th & Tennyson (go check it out!) and unfortunately they’re not going to be able to do tacos for us this season.  With that said, we’re bringing in No Que No Tacos & Mariscos to do food for the 2013 Summer season.  No Que No has an actual food truck and will be able to serve a bigger menu than we offered last year (including fried foods!), so expect a wider variety of delicious options for your patio dining pleasure.  On the drink side of things, we’ll still be featuring our signature agua frescas con Svedka with a few new surprises for 2013.  It’s gonna be an incredible Summer at Goodness, hopefully you can join us!  2701 Larimer St / No Cover / 21+.

Austin hip hop legend DJ Nick Nack on La Barbecue: “It’s the best brisket in Austin”

Starting Friday, 2/8 -> The Solution w/DJ Low Key, Lazy Eyez & more is back weekly!!! Every Friday night at the award-winning Meadowlark!!!

EVERY FRIDAY, STARTING 2/8 -> The Solution is back.  Every Friday night.  Say it with me one time, The Solution is back, every Friday night.  Ahhhh, it sounds so nice.  Not that we haven’t been doing parties all around town over the last year or two, but it’s nice to have a good home base for the party that people can count on every weekend.  Now that you’ve hopefully committed the basics to memory, let’s talk details.

After a dozen and a fantastic Summer of daytime parties at Goodness (which will be back in May, btw), the Meadowlark seemed like the perfect fit to make our weekly home; most y’all have already been through before and really like it, they have the flexibility to support performances, the drinks aren’t too pricey, the vibe is good and most importantly, they trust and appreciate us as DJs, promoters & cultivators of a music community (the owner constantly tells me how much loves the diverse crowd we bring in, try finding that attitude at most venues near downtown).  Plus, their patio will be the cherry on top for warm Summer nights (although after 10PM, the DJs have to be inside).

So check it out, here’s the new plan for Fridays at the Meadowlark, The Solution, & Introducing (the happy hour party I recently started, based around new music).  Things will kick off with Introducing w/DJ Low Key from 5-9pm, complete with complimentary green chile tamales and lots of brand new music.  Then at 9pm, things will switch over to The Solution w/DJ Low Key, Lazy Eyez, (sometimes) Sounds Supreme, special guests and everything hip hop and great in life.  Then, once a month, we’ll feature on a Friday night to give Denver its monthly fix of the best in up and coming national and local talent.

On 2/8, we’ll be kicking off our six year anniversary aka #TheSolution6 with me, DJ Lazy Eyez, Special guest DJ Izer and a surprise or two on the turntables, plus we’ll be celebrating the birthdays of #COhiphop favs and our friends Xencs L Wing, Joe Blizzy & Bravo One.  Should be another one for the books, see y’all there!  21+/Free until 11/$5 after/2701 Larimer St.
