Something to add to your Christmas wishlist, courtesy of Mikal Hameed…

My good friend Eric Maitrepierre recently hit me up with some pics of our homey Mikal Hameed’s latest “sound sculpture” for Verve, a snowmobile/DJ booth for the label’s Verve Remixed Volume 5 release this Christmas, and now that he’s posted them on his blog I can share them with everybody else.  Not only does it look cool as hell but it actually works (damn Mikal, I didn’t know you were on some super scientist ish!!!), complete with Serato and extra speakers mounted in the front.  Later this year you’ll be able to check it at art shows in NYC & beyond, so make sure you check it if it comes to your town.

Check out more pics of the snowmobile & other cool stuff over at the MJH Galleries blog.

NC’s been busy lately…New iddish from Kooley High, Edgar Allen Floe & the Foreign Exchange…

If you’ve been checking out my mixtapes then I’m sure you know I’m a big fan of what’s been going on in North Carolina for the last 6 years or so. Little Brother & the Justus League paved the way for a ton of talented MCs/DJs/producers/singers/etc from NC to get some shine and lately a there’s been a bunch of free projects coming from some of these cats that I’ve been lucky enough to build with over the years. Here’s some links to a new comp from 9th Wonder proteges Kooley High (in collaboration with WYDU, ZillaSays & Ace Jones, check the explanation here), the prequel to Edgar Allen Floe’s (check out the track he recorded for my Mixing in Action #1 tape) upcoming Streetwise album and the sampler for Nicolay & Phonte’s new Foreign Exchange album, Leave It All Behind (one of my most anticipated albums in a loooooong time), set to drop on 10/14.

Kooley High – Burn After Listening

Edgar Allen Floe – The Road To Streetwise

The Foreign Exchange – Leave It All Behind Sampler & first single “Daykeeper”

And in case you were wondering what’s was up with my closest NC collaborator, Median, just know he’s been in the lab.  I’ve got some CRAZY new iddish from him, but I gotta keep it to myself for now.  All I gotta say about it is trust, Mixing In Action #3 is shaping up very well.

A movement has popped off…EGU or nothing…

Please take a minute to read the story below & show a little support for the homey Che Grand.  His music is RIDICULOUS and if you support the stuff I do and the music I play then I’m sure you wanna hear his album too. Anyways, check out the story below, swiped from Che’s blog, Zimbabwe For The Public, about an EGU petition started by the guys over at Rock the Dub ->

i don’t want the petition to come off gimmicky so i’m not going to promote it like its a song or some shit, bottomline is i have an album and i want that thing out

if you want to sign it thats love

however…..

ok, check it.. lets make it fun, i have a ton of non album material that a few cats want me to give a home.

And P.S. make sure you download Che Grand & DJ Low Key – Limited Edition:The Fixtape over in the mixtapes section if you haven’t already. It’s the official Che Grand late pass.

Blu & Exile at the Red Bull Music Academy in Barcelona…

A few days ago, the homeys Blu & Exile flew out to Barcelona to lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy. They broke down everything from how they linked up to playing the MPC to their philosophies on collaborating with so many other artists and more in a 75 minute long session. For those of us not to be so lucky as to be attending the Academy, you can check out the video over at the Red Bull Music Academy web site. Ex playing the MPC live (watch what he does with the Herbie Hancock joint around 25 minutes in) and the talk of Below the Heavens live with a band in 2009 alone is worth checking it out.  And, uh, check out that Blu & Exile “Blu Collar Workers” video that I co-executive produced (big up Eric Maitrepierre) & cameod in earlier this year, it’s got a co-sign from Kanye and almost 60,000 views on youtube.

Wake Your Daughter Up interview with DJ Low Key…

Props to Trav over at WYDU, his blog is super thorough and he stays on top of shit. It’s no wonder he was featured in Vibe Magazine as one of the top 30 hip hop sites on the web.  Anyways, we linked up earlier this year for an interview and he recently hit me for a follow up (to be posted soon).  Anyways, here’s the intro, catch the part one of the interview over at WYDUBlog.com ->

If you think you’ve heard of DJ Low Key before, you probably have. I kid him all the time and call him the Denver Mick Boogie, but give him time and he’ll be the next Mick Boogie. Low Key is one of the top club DJ’s in Denver as well as a fixture on the city’s hip hop scene for more than six years, doing shows, opening for out of town acts, and down with the well known regional crew Basementalism (who does a wicked radio show out of Boulder). The past year or so, he really started making a name for himself, first as mixing Justus League MC Median and his “Relief in the Making” mixtape that dropped before his dope “Median’s Relief” LP from last year. He was voted the “Best Hip Hop DJ” in Denver by the alternative press Westword Entertainment Mag. He also mixed the “Tanya Morgan presents Ilwil – Beat Thieves 2” that dropped earlier this year. He was the tour DJ for the first half of the Tanya Morgan, Hieroglyphics tour that zigged zagged across the nation. He was the executive producer for Blu & Exile’s “Blu Collar Worker” video, where my man gets all P Diddy’d out and makes cameos all up in the video (at the record store and at Exile’s crib). And he has MORE stuff on the way (I just can’t say what yet, but it’ll be HUGE). So if you don’t know him, you NEED to know him and that’s what I’m here to help with.

Check out the interview at www.wydublog.com (one of Vibe Magazine’s top 30 hip hop blogs)…

Yo Che & Amen, they bootleggin’ our shit (c) SV…Save your rubles people…

Over the last few months I’ve seen a few shady looking sites selling MP3s of my free mixtape downloads.  I guess I’ll take it as flattery since one is Russian and I’m already without free time.  With that said, at least put up the covers & link to my site if you’re gonna bootleg my tapes fuckers.  Anyways, download Che Grand & DJ Low Key – Limited Edition:The Fixtape and DJ Low Key & DJ Amen – Bar Luxe Late Night Soundtrack w/ Sy Smith (neither me nor Amen spin at Bar Luxe anymore, it’s a cool spot though) for FREE in the mixtapes section if you haven’t already and save yourself some rubles.

Behind the scenes video of Tanya Morgan, DJ Low Key & Aeon on XM’s Subsoniq

Here’s one of three behind the scenes clips of the Tanya Morgan/DJ Low Key/Aeon Subsoniq takeover show from the tour.  Check out the other 2 over at the Subsoniq web site and stay tuned for the TM/Low Key/Aeon takeover show, it should be airing on XM sometime in the next week or two (I’ll work on getting some audio up afterwards).  Last but not least, big up Nate Geezie, K-Murdock & KB for having us down to the show.

Tanya Morgan/Hieroglyphics Freshly Dipped Mega Update #4

The amphitheater at Millenium Park, Chicago

Day 31 – Off day in Chicago: We ate more Harold’s Chicken, checked out Pineapple Express (funny but not as funny as expected), hit up a mall that was literally 2/3 shoe stores (no finds) and checked out Millenium Park downtown (super cool).

Day 32 – Madison, WI: I had a bad time in Wisconsin courtesy of a $186 ticket for going 80 in a 65 (laaaaame!!!) and hands down the nastiest hotel on the tour.  I will say this though, the show wasn’t bad and cheese curds are fantastic.  The next stop in Minneapolis made up for it though.

Me, Von Pea dressed up as a lego storm trooper & Donwill at the Mall of America

Von & me at First Avenue in Minneapolis

Day 33 – Minneapolis: We made a quick stop at the Mall of America before heading downtown to playing at the legendary First Avenue (as seen in Purple Rain!!!).  We were all geeked to play at a venue with so much history and hopefully our set didn’t embarrass the purple one’s legacy.  Also, I got a chance to spin a little bit to set things off to and I’m still buggin out to think that Prince has played on that stage that we did.

Me & TM rockin onstage at First Avenue

DJ Torae from Hiero under the purple lights

Hiero at First Avenue

Nebraskan jukebox classic Donuts (not pictured but in the same section, 36 Chambers and a Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings album)

Day 34 – Omaha: Nebraska was surprisingly cool.  From bumping into my Red Bull Music Academy homey/DJ/promoter extraordinaire Brent Crampton before the show and grabbing a (free!) delicious dinner at a fancy Spanish spot where he was spinning to catching up with some friends from CO to the enthusiastic crowd, everything in Omaha was better than expected.  After the show I ended up at Brent’s super dope after hours spot dancing (yep, me…dancing, just a little bit…ha!!!) til super late.  Fun night though, too bad I had to wake up super early for the trip to CO, luckily I was excited for CO so sleep didn’t matter.

Day 35 – Boulder, CO: One the second half of the long ass drive from Omaha to Denver we were hit with some of the craziest rain I’ve ever seen (and of course I was driving when it dumped rain). Nevertheless, we trudged through it and made it to my apartment in Denver with enough time for me marvel at how weird home felt after being gone for five weeks and pack up records for the show’s afterparty at my weekly party, the Solution, before rushing up to soundcheck at the Fox.  The show was DOPE, the spot was PACKED when we went on and the crowd showed mad love (check the youtube clips), except for when Von gassed them up about me wearing a tux (like I said, check out the clips).

Bonus – Freshly Dipped Afterparty at the Solution w/DJ Low Key, Sounds Supreme, Tanya Morgan & the Blue Scholars: We hung out at the venue for an hour after the show to sell some merch then we were off to Denver to hit up the afterparty at the Solution, alongside my partner on the night, Sounds Supreme.  Despite the unseasonably cold/wet weather, the rooftop patio was still PACKED tight with heads and cute girls (gotta love it).  I hopped on the tables, TM rocked a quick set and we kept the party moving as the Blue Scholars showed up and we winded down the night.  Being gone and coming home definitely made me appreciate the CO hip hop scene, heads were buggin out all night and it was a great way to cap off the tour.

I woke up the next morning at my spot hungover and tired, Don & Von took off to ultimately end up in the Bay and it was back to my “normal” life of DJing, promoting events & all the other random music iddish in Denver (for now at least).  Big up TM & IM for bringing me along, everyone involved in the tour, all the fans who came out to the shows, everyone we met along the way and a special shout to the homey Shannon out west.  Stay tuned as I get back on my mixtape grind with some projects that I’m extra excited about for the fall (I think you will be too), dope new club nights (of course), some crazy events (just wait) & more.

Tanya Morgan/Hieroglyphics Freshly Dipped Mega Update #3

Round three of my day by day coverage of my journeys on the Freshly Dipped tour DJing for Tanya Morgan alongside Hieroglyphics, Blue Scholars & more.  Hope you’re still interested…

TM, special guest Che Grand & me in NYC (pic jacked from Audible Treats, thanks Michelle)

Day 21 – Providence: Traffic out of NYC was THICK and it took twice as long as expected to get to Providence, but we still made it there in good spirits thanks to the random assortment of CDs that Von grabbed (Saadiq’s first solo joint and Snoop’s Topp Dogg album), Don’s early Jerx/Ilwil demos and his infamous new jack swing/early 90s r&b collection (classic material).  The show went down in a smaller, packed out club type venue and it was hot as fuck.  The crowd was super into things though so I can’t be mad.  Big up DJ Direkt, Sylvy and her girls and the local opening DJ who played all wax (sorry I can’t remember your name homey).

The coolest block in Portland

Day 22 – Portland, Maine: We pulled into Maine in the middle of a cold, overcast day and everything seemed cool enough when we pulled up to the venue.  The friendly door guy pointed us in the direction of food and when we walked out to see some kind of fresh little graf event going on behind the venue.  We checked it out for a minute and kept walking down the street towards food, next thing we know we’re realizing that there’s weirdos of all sorts, lots of afternoon drunks and a large amount of extra creepy homeless people around town, one tried to fight Donwill for no reason at all.  The whole vibe was super weird, I can see how Stephen King could be from there.  Anyways, we grabbed some food (local flava = haddock) and made our way back to the venue at what ended up being a good show.  The town doesn’t really get a chance to see to many shows like the tour, so the whole crowd was super enthusiastic and we couldn’t be mad at that.

Day 23 – Burlington, VA: First off, let me say that Higher Ground was one of the best venues we played on the tour.  From the numerous, clean, well stocked green rooms to the friendly staff to the super enthusiastic crowd, everything about the show in Burlington was dope.  It kinda reminded me of a newer version of the Fox Theatre up in Boulder, which is easily one of my top three favorite places to see a show or play ever.  Also, me, Don, Von, A-Plus and Tajai got into everybody’s favorite, the classic Nas vs Jay-Z debate, backstage before the show, gotta love that it still goes on in 2008.

The Burlington crowd via rushed iPhone camera shot before we got on.

Day 24 – Off Day in Burlington: The highlight of the day off was finding this bus in Vermont and getting a Ben & Jerry’s smoothy (local flava!!!).  We had an early night so we could wake up super early to head up north along with everyone else from the tour on some caravan ish (for work permit purposes).  We had heard crazy horror stories from most of Hiero about loooooong delays at the border so we cleaned up the van and got ready for a long day at customs.

Day 25 – Ottawa: We made it through customs in only four short hours.  Those four hours were actually pretty entertaining, from finding out most of the tour’s real names to joking about tour bullshit to talkin conspiracy theories with Casual outside, the time went by way quicker that it could have.  From the border we headed through Montreal (a little too French for me) and on into Ottawa.  Ottawa seemed cool enough, for some reason we went on extra early and in general the show was a little thin.  I ended up getting some skunky (or otherwise bad) Hoegaarden (which is one of my favorite beers) that left me hurting for the rest of the night.

A-Plus, DJ Lex (freshly dipped) & Knobody in the T-Dot

Day 26 – Toronto: On the way to Toronto we stopped and got some fish & chips (delicious) and some Canadian junk food.  We got wine gums (yuck, they get the gas face, regardless of what Che Grand claims), some gross slushy drink and my favorite, the kinder egg (my prize was this toy that’s also a crayon) and kinder bar.  More importantly, we made it to Toronto, which is a super dope city.  The t-dot is beautiful.  Beautiful city, beautiful women, beautiful vibe.  The venue, Mod Club, had the coolest lighting on the tour, TO packed the spot and the Blue Scholars’ homey Chev (what up Chev!) joined the tour to perform a verse feature with them too, good time.  And by the way, late night Chinese food is the shit.

Day 27 – London, Ontario: I gotta admit, I’d never heard of London, Ontario until all this tour iddish came together.  It seemed like a random ass place when I heard about it and it turned out to be extra random when we got there.  We pulled into town to check in to the hotel and it seemed like a super clean, nice Canadian city/town with the exception of some weird sex shop which was in the block between the hotel and an Old Navy.  We headed downtown before the show for a little exploring where we were greeted by what had to be the horniest stop of the tour, no joke.  It seemed like the whole town was just crazy sexually frustrated.  Grimy lookin sex shops, strip clubs, adult plays (ahahahaha), $7.99 porn DVD specials at the convenience store.  With that said, the crowd was hands down the livest on the tour.  They went NUTS when I was setting up my DJ ish and stayed nuts until the show ended.  It was one of those nights where it get so humid that it drips sweat from the ceiling.  Big up the heads in London and thanks for the energy (maybe it comes from all that sexual frustration…lol…hopefully not).

Day 28 – Ann Arbor: We woke up in Canada especially ready to come back to the U.S. after a few days of ultra limited communications (A-Plus scared me with tales of having phone bills from Canada that were so big they knocked off $400 and they were still huge) and the weird vibe of London and were greeted by a great night in Ann Arbor.  Donwill got sick from a $7.99 steaks & eggs from a diner and rallied for a dope show.  The show was especially dope from the get go.  At soundcheck I DJed a long, goofy freestyle session between Don, Von, the Blue Scholar’s producer/DJ Sabzi (who’s definitely not a rapper but was fantastic in the session) and the Scholar’s homey Chev.  A little later the Blind Pig opened doors to a line around the block that was especially up on my mixtapes (gotta love that).  When we got onstage the venue was almost packed and they rocked hard with us from the get go.  Well, except this one who stood at the front, arms crossed bobbing his head left to right in a way that made it hard to tell if he was feeling the music and or shaking his head “no”.  That dude ended up getting more into it by the end and turned out to be none other than TM’s label mate and super dope Detroit based MC Finale (and no he wasn’t fronting of TM, regardless of how it first looked).  Last but not least the crowd was treated to a very dope Von Pea freestyle after he switched up the line “my best friend’s in heaven” to “J Dilla’s in heaven” during “Stay Tuned”.  If anyone recorded that show/song (or really any of the songs from the tour), please holla at your boy.

Day 29 – Columbus, OH: We made a super early morning stop in Cincinatti to check in with Don’s fam and do laundry before copping a couple of bags of BBQ Grippos and heading up to Columbus.  At the show we had the honor of being introduced by J Rawls of Lone Catalysts fame as Don performed for his home-state crowd as we battled the minor technical difficulties that plagued all of the acts throughout the night.

Day 30 – Chicago: Chicago was an all around dope time.  AWESOME food (Harold’s Chicken is AMAZING…Mild sauce + salt & pepper = magic, not to mention Chicago style pizza is dope too), the city has a ton of personality, the lake is beautiful, the city has a lot of TM fans and we had a great turnout for the show, can’t ask for much more.  We almost completely switched up the set and the result was refreshing but a little awkward compared to how well the more familiar set (even with nightly variations) was going.  With that said, everyone in Chicago got to see a set with “3 Emcees” (with Ilyas being especially missed), “We Doin Our…”, “Bout To Be Some” and “How Low” amongst others.

Stay tuned as I wrap up all the tour iddish in the next couple of days…Video clips from Boulder, me and TM as Purple Rain extras, pics from the CO show’s afterparty at the Solution & more…
