Tanya Morgan – Brooklynati Liner Notes from VonPea.com…

Von Pea (from Tanya Morgan) has been posting up the liner notes to Brooklynati over the last few months and it’s a great read.  Here’s his notes on “On Our Way”, I highly recommend you check out VonPea.com for more insight into one of 2009’s best albums:

When i first heard the OG for this i knew what i wanted to do right away. back in the moonlighting days my production wouldnt do much at all (as far as changeups and variation) and for the bridge ep i was more focused on just cleaning my sound up, making everything sound better. when it came time to produce brooklynati i wanted more variation in the way i used samples while still sticking to my style of beatmaking. this is probably my favorite beat because i was still able to have certain repetitive elements while having the music totally change and “keep it moving”. the very beginning of the song lines up with the very end of moonlighting so you could play them together like one long album. as i was working on the music i was ad libbing to myself the same adlibs from “if the papes come” so i threw them in the background as percussion as my nod to tribe. same time i wanted to have a nod to jay dee so i played on the keys an interpretation of “nothing like this” for the chorus. my personal “thank you” to tribe and jay’s “beats, rhymes and life” collaboration. that album taught me how to make beats and this track marked a new progression in my sound. I guess its like thanking your 9th grade tutor on the day of graduaiton.

before i get further, i should let it be known theres a demo version of almost the whole album (dont even ask! maybe in 10 years…ha!!) and we stopped the album to go on tour with hieroglyphics and the blue scholars for what ended up being 3 months of being away. i should also mention that for those 3 months it was only myself and donwill out as TM because ilyas couldnt be away at the time for family reasons. that 3 month gap lead to frustration on all parts. while he was home not working on the most important album of our career up to this point, we were away not working on it, and realizing how divided hip hop truly was while on the road. we all got back to work november 2008, rerecording and reworking music we’ve been working on since moonlighting dropped in 2006.

ilyas had this new verse that was based on frustration and he was damn near screaming in it, it just didnt really work as the first verse on the first song on the new album. we know how short attention spans are now, new potential fans wouldve heard that and probably turned it off. when it came time to try and convince him to change it the argument was “nah man, i feel like they got us in this box, we’re bigger than this box, im trying to get where we need to be, get our money, etc…” and all i could say is “hmm…sounds like you been feeling like manute bol when the roofs too low, the box they put us in aint big enough for you to grow!” haha…he had actually said everything he felt he said in the rewrite, in the original verse. and better. more thought out and less emotional. the verse you all ended up hearing is the equivalent to telling someone youre mad vs punching them in the face. the punch wouldve been too much.

also, i apologize for my “wack dance” line, i now feel like theres space for everyone and everything. that probably was written around the time cranking everything was in style. crank the superman, crank the spongebob, crank every damn thing. i was hating in retrospect, but i still say the line at shows haha…dancing is apart of hip hop, and just because someone has a dance to their song that dont mean its killing hip hop. thats a cop out, and i dont believe that anymore. muhsinah was supposed to sing the hook to this song, just the part im singing. id written it and wanted someone else to do it, she had offered to do so but she then had to leave for the common tour so we never got around to it. in the end it all worked out, rick v got me sounding like i can really sing! ha!!!!

Here’s what they think about you (c) vintage Ice Cube…Some feedback on 2009…

Now that 2009 is in the rear view, I wanna post up a little feedback about mixtapes of mine and the rappers/producers I’ve been workin with.  Hopefully you’re already up on all these releases and you’ve made up your mind for yourself on how good they are.  If not, check out the feedback and links below to catch up ketchup find out more.

TiRon – Ketchup (mixed by DJ Low Key) – I linked up with LA’s TiRon in early ’09 and our tape ended up getting props all over the place. Earlier this year, the LA Times called it one of “the best releases of ’09 (thus far)” and said TiRon was “Los Angeles’ best rapper”, while countless hip hop fans/blogs/sites/magazines/etc showed love.  Shake of the insanely popular blog 2DopeBoyz.com (probably my favorite blog), called it his favorite mixtape of the year and his partner Meka had it on his best mixtapes of ’09 list too.  PopularLemonade.com called it their artist mixtape of the year, there was lots of talk about TiRon in the XXL Freshmen post on 2DopeBoyz, Moovmnt said he was next to blow up & that’s just the half.  Stay tuned for the follow up mixtape, Mustard, in early 2010.

Jermiside – Die Jerm Die (mixed by DJ Low Key): Me & Jermiside (of Red Giants/Lessondary fame) dropped Die Jerm Die in October and made a lot of noise on the blog circuit as well, receiving props on major sites like KevinNottingham.com, FlawlessHustle.com & 2DB.com.  Wake Your Daughter Up, one of Vibe Magazine’s Top 30 Blogs, said it “might just be one of the best mixtapes of the year”, CokeMachineGlow.com called it “the most lyrical release of the year”  & RockTheDub.com said it was “impressive…what you need”.

Tanya MorganBrooklynati: In 2009, I got to travel to some of the biggest music events in the country (SXSW & A3C), go on a run of shows with a rap legend (Dres from Black Sheep) and hit up a bunch of cities (NYC, St. Louis & many more) to DJ for Tanya Morgan in promotion of their latest album, Brooklynati. Brooklynati’s been included on more “Best of 2009” lists than I can keep up with, receiving props from names like the Onion A/V Club, Village Voice, Allmusic.com, iTunes Indie Spotlight and a bunch of other top notch publications/sites/blogs/stores.  Check out samples and pick it up here or here if you haven’t already.

Che Grand – Everything’s Good Ugly: Now that NYC’s Che Grand has finally released his brilliant debut album, Everything’s Good Ugly, we’re just about ready to knock out the sequel to the Fixtape, our collab from 2007.  His album followed fellow Lessondary members Tanya Morgan on a lot of “Best of 2009” lists and that’s just the tip of the iceberg, Che is one of the best rappers out, period.  Just ask the infamous Jay Electronica, who praised Che after he hopped on Jay’s unfinished “Hagler” demo (Kanye’s liked it too, check his blog).

U-N-I & Ro Blvd – A Love Supreme: I’ve been raving about Ro Blvd for years and years and when he linked up with Thurzday and Y-O aka U-N-I for A Love Supreme, he showed everybody why.  U-N-I are one of the best groups out (XXL, Billboard & Complex agree) and Ro showed his ass, producing one of the years best albums.  Don’t believe me?  Just search “A Love Supreme” and “best of 2009” and watch google light up.  Me and Ro Blvd were/are in a crew called the B Club together and have some dope ish up our sleeve for 2010, starting with a ridiculous exclusive Donnis & Ro Blvd song for the Solution Mixtape #1 (with my partner Sounds Supreme), dropping in a few weeks.

Shouts to everybody who downloaded, rocked and talked about these mixtapes, albums and artists, we appreciate the support.  With that said, 2009 was the shit and 2010 is about to be even better.  Last but not least, make sure you check out De La Extras #2, technically my last mixtape of 2009 (posted minutes before midnight on New Year’s Eve, from the middle of a party actually…LOL), and stay tuned for a ton of great releases and big things in 2010.

[DOWNLOAD: Donwill – Laura’s Song]

In gearing up for the release of Don Cusack in High Fidelity I’ve chosen to make this song a free download. The response to the video was pretty overwhelming and I figure there are more than a few of you who would be interested in having the song. It’s the radio edit for all you DJ’s out there.
