DJ Sounds Supreme – Boots With The Fur (Top 40/Remix/House Mixtape)

I don’t normally post up top 40/remix/house type stuff but Sounds Supreme (my partner in the Solution) MURDERS that ish, so I had to post his latest tape, Boots With The Fur (check out the tracklist here).  Here’s more about it in his words:

Its been over 2 years since I have dropped an official Top 40/Remix/House tape, and Ive been itching to get it done. Almost 60 minutes long and full of heat. Easily one of the most anticipated mixes coming out of Denver for 2010, and a no brainer for your NYE parties. Big shout out to the L in Lard for help with the cover art, and what a fitting name for a party mix.

Joe Buck is AWESOME…Check his Album Cover ReVISIONS…

Joe Buck aka Joe Buckingham is a fantastic artist who you might know from De La Soul’s infamous De La Soul Is Dead artwork, as well as projects with Nike, Spitkicker and countless clothing companies and record labels.  He recently posted a series of album cover revisions on his site, pieces where he re-imagines the covers of hip hop albums.  As expected, the results are really dope, check out a few samples below and the whole series at hollispark.com.

FRIDAY, 12/18 -> Me and Sounds Supreme are happy to welcome the infamous DJ Benzi (of Clipse – We Got The Remix, The New Deal & Mike Posner fame) and ATL’s finest, Donnis, to the Solution.  If you’re still sleeping, go download the Donnis – Diary of an ATL Brave and DJ Benzi – The New Deal mixtapes, both presented by 10 Deep ASAP and catch up.  And as if bringing these guys out for a free party wasn’t enough, we’ve got giveaways from Fool’s Gold Records, Family Affair, Frank151 & more.  Consider it our Christmas gift to you.  21+ / No cover / Music at 9 / $3 Premium drafts and cocktails until 11.

Saturday, 12/19 -> Low Key & Vajra’s Christmas Party at So Damn Down at Shag

SATURDAY, 12/19 -> Me and world renowned turntablist DJ Vajra are getting together to throw a So Damn Down Christmas Party at Shag (15th & Champa downtown).  We’ll be rockin the best in hip hop with a few holiday twists (“Christmas in Hollis” of course, plus a few more seasonal jams) to get you in the season’s spirit.

Also, we’re gonna do a Secret Santa with records.  If you’re interested in participating hit me up at questions@djlowkey.com by Wednesday, 12/17 and I’ll get you more info and/or sign you up.  Basically everyone participating will randomly get assigned a person to buy a record or two for ($20 limit).  Because of the magic of digging, $20 or less could entail anything and that’s where the fun comes in (and no, you don’t have to be a DJ to do it, just a lover of music).  21+ / No cover / Starts at 10.

On the road with Tanya Morgan recaps…TM “So Damn Down/Hold Tight” Rehearsal MP3 w/Daru Jones & the Cipher, Subsoniq w/Dres & Tanya Morgan podcast and more…

I’ve been meaning to post about my last trip on the road with Tanya Morgan for a minute.  Here’s recaps and links to some audio, video and reviews of the shows. Also, make sure you go cop Brooklynati if you haven’t already, it’s been popping up on “Best of ’09” lists left and right and it was easily one of my favorite albums that dropped this year.

10/1 – After catching up with fam in ATL for a few days, I linked up with Tanya Morgan, Dom from IM Records & Alex from Move Forward Music downtown to get into A3C mode.  We roamed around, Von Pea told everyone the story of how he ended up producing a Slim Thug song for the Daily Show and we bumped into a ton of other A3C artists around the hotel (Beatminerz stayed across the hall, so random).  We caught up with Che Grand later and headed over to the sound check for the Perfect Attendance event we were playing at.  The lineup for the show was stacked with some of the best new acts out and I was happy to enjoy it on some fan iddish.  There were a ton of great acts on the bill, with me, Che & Tanya Morgan going on towards the end. I DJed for Che and our set was short, sweet and well received.  Then we got into the TM set and in the words of Dom (Tanya Morgan’s A&R), “It was the best Tanya Morgan show I’ve ever seen”.  Out of the 50 or so shows I’ve DJed for Tanya Morgan, that had to be one of the freshest crowds.  They knew all the words, went extra nuts for “Hardcore Gentlemen” & were all around hyped.  But don’t take my word for it, check out the review over at the Smoking Section.

10/2 – Woke up at sunrise and flew back to Colorado to DJ a wedding.  It wasn’t just any wedding though.  My friend Christian got married to a musician by the name of Derrick Hodge.  I consider myself somewhat music savvy but I was amazed when I saw dude’s discography, which includes everyone from Common to Kanye to Timbaland to Sade.  Check out his myspace page and get up on a ridiculously talented musician, now on tour with Maxwell.

10/3 – Pulled an all-nighter to fly back from Denver to ATL for more A3C Perfect Attendance fun.  I caught up with my pops for some Zaxby’s and then linked up with TiRon, who I DJed for that night (you better have downloaded our mixtape, Ketchup, earlier this year!!!) and Jermiside (You better have Die Jerm Die too!!!).  The show went well, it was my first time DJing for TiRon, which was dope.  I also got to see another great lineup of acts including J Cole (pictured above at sound check), the homies U-N-I, Diz Gibran, Mike Baker, El Prez, show-stealer Grip Plyaz and more.  A3C is a incredible event, I highly recommend you check it out if you’re a fan of up and coming hip hop.

10/4 & 10/5 – Woke up again at sunrise and it was off to NYC to link back up with TM and rehearse a show with Daru Jones and the Cipher, an AMAZING group of musicians who we we lucky enough to get to rock with.  Going to rehearsals with such a talented group of musicians was easily one of the highlights of ’09 for me.  The spontaneity and variety of ways a good band can play songs is a beautiful thing.  They’d just randomly break into different flips or elements of classic records out of nowhere, it was crazy. Check out this (warning:low quality, from an iphone recorder) mp3 of the band and Donwill unexpectedly rockin Slum Village “Hold Tight” during a take of “So Damn Down”. Kinda fresh, right?

.:Tanya Morgan, Daru Jones, the Cipher & DJ Low Key – “Hold Tight” / “So Damn Down” Rehearsal MP3 – 10/4/09:.

10/6 – We rocked a show at the legendary S.O.B.s (of De La Soul – Stakes Is High, interlude before “Itzsoweezee” fame) with Daru Jones and the Cipher.  I also ended up the last minute house DJ (bonus) and got to see legendary Native Tongue Dres (from Black Sheep) rock with a band.  After Dres tore ish down, I introduced the band; Ray Angry on keys, Daru Jones on drums, Louis Cato on bass, Inmar Thomas on trumpet and Nir Fielder on guitar, myself and Tanya Morgan.  Then I got to be a part of a classic night on Brooklynati history.  Check out videos below for some footage, and make sure you read about Filthy’s 24 hour trip to NYC.

10/7 – After NYC, it was off to Baltimore, the second of three shows with Dres.  This trip to Baltimore was completely different than last time and probably the only not so great part of the trip.  Von rocked his verse from the Keelay & Zaire version of “So Damn Down” over the OG beat and that was a cool surprise.  Otherwise the show wasn’t too special so I’m gonna just keep it moving since this post is already long…LOL.

10/8 – I fell asleep on air at Serius XM on Subsoniq…LMAO.  The itis hit me HARD (courtesy of mambo sauce & a comfy leather couch) towards the end of a long TM/Dres interview and I was dozing off and catching myself like you’d do in a high school class.  The show was actually super interesting with Dres dropping classic hip hop stories & breaking Native Tongues news, but the power of mambo sauce is something else, not to mention, I passed out during a TM segment.  The homie KB called me out and it was pretty hilarious (“I’m ready for some more Dres stories”…LOL).  Check it out here and make sure to tune into Subsoniq, it’s one of the best radio shows out.

.:Tanya Morgan & Dres on Subsoniq – Part 1 & Part 2 (w/me dozing off at the end):.

After Subsoniq, I shook off the itis and it was off to soundcheck with the homie BJ at Liv.  The show there went well, lots of familiar faces in the crowd and a good vibe.  Also, Dres finally rocked “B-Boy’s Theme”, my favorite song from his 8WM/Novakane album and we saw Tatyana Ali in a diner after the show.  Not too bad, right?

10/10 -  After a day to recoup in NYC, we hit up the Lessondary Radio Show at PNC.  I rocked a rushed set on what had to be the worst mixer I’ve ever used (not hating, just saying…LOL) and we headed out of the city for show at SUNY – Purchase.  It was probably the least hip hop type crowd I’ve ever rocked with TM in front of, but they were open off our set, I swear Ilyas could have stage dived if he played his cards right.  After the show, I pulled one last all-nighter and it was back to CO to spin at Hapa Life that night.

Props and thanks to: TM, Alex, Che, TiRon, Jermiside, Dres, DJ Strike, Dom, KB & Subsoniq, Fadia & Soul, Diz Gibran, U-N-I, Ayomari, El Prez, Daru, the Cipher, Meka, Truth Live, DJ Trackstar, Paul Printz, Hallway, Oddisee, BJ & Monica, DJ Harvey Dent, Audible Treats, Outasight, Donny Goines, Fresh Daily and everybody else I got to see and meet.

Popular Lemonade’s 4 Horsemen Party Pics…

Miss Rachel from PopularLemonade.com recently celebrated the site’s six month anniversary* with a crazy event featuring me & DJ Lazy Eyez at So Damn Down at Shag.  Her site’s super dope and has been doing crazy numbers and the party reflected it.  So Damn Down was packed, the vibe was perfect and 50 lucky people took home a remarkable LARD x Denver Frank x Whorebath x Filthe tee exclusive to that night.  The design for the front of the shirt is above and below are some pics from the party.  If you missed it, don’t worry, me and Miss Rachel are already talking about the next one.

More pics of the party after the jump, at PopularLemonade.com, LARD’s site, the General’s Booty, Denver Frank’s site, Flickr & probably a few other place if you look (yes, the party was that epic, word to Miss Rachel, I guess lemonade is popular).

Last month, me, Sounds Supreme and Akomplice Clothing set up a party to celebrate the release of their 11th season at Shag.  We had our homies U-N-I & Theo come out to rock and rounded up some beautiful girls to show off the new line.  The spot was packed, U-N-I & Theo rocked hard and a good time was had by all.  Make sure you download U-N-I & Ro Blvd – A Love Supreme here, Theo – The Birth here and check out Akomplice Season 11 here.

Westword Hey DJ! Q&A with DJ Low Key…

Last month Dave Herrera over at Westword (Denver’s main alt-weekly) hit me up for a new feature they’re doing called “Hey DJ!” that profiles Denver DJs…I talked about pissing off Bone Thugs-In-Harmony in Boulder, discovering Honey Suckle Breeze, why I love London, Ontario, the upcoming Solution Tape #1 w/Sounds Supreme (now set to drop in January with a nice little collection of exclusives, premiers and live recordings from the Solution) and all sorts of other randomness…Below is a taste of the interview and a link to the rest…Shouts to Westword for showing some love to us DJs…

Westword_Hey_DJ_Low_Key_Screenshot.jpg

So what’s your story, in 100 words or less? It all started with dubbing DJ mixes off the radio in ATL when I’d visit my pops as a teenager. Got some turntables to cop random hip-hop 12-inches when I was fifteen, then decided I wanted to spin parties after hanging out with DJ Petey and DJ Chonz (Radio Bums!!!). That turned into clubs, mixtapes and college radio.  Now I throw three weekly parties, DJ for a rap group called Tanya Morgan all around the country, record mixtapes with some of my favorite new artists and work on all sorts of other random music ish.

Name of a track you can’t get out of your head: Donwill as Don Cusack & Harlem’s Cash “Love Junkee” (produced by Aeon). Donwill from Tanya Morgan is releasing an album next year called Don Cusack in High Fidelity, where he raps as the main character in the movie High Fidelity. This track from it parallels the part of the movie/album where he takes home Marie De Salle for a one night stand. Don & Harlem’s Cash go in hard on what might be the catchiest song on the album. Not to mention the production by Aeon, one of my favorite new producers, is INSANE. I’ve been running around singing part of the hook for months.*

*Check it on DJ Low Key & Sounds Supreme – The Solution Tape #1 (dropping next month)
