Red Bull Music Academy Updates…

News on RBMA 2011 from RedBullMusicAcademy.com. Denver, we’ll still be doing the mail in dinner this Sunday, 4/3, even though the postmark deadline has been extended to 4/26; so if your app is done and you’d like to come down, please e-mail Justin [at] RedBullMusicAcademy {dot} com to RSVP:

The Red Bull Music Academy 2011 will not be held in Tokyo. New location to be announced April 11.

We have been in close contact with our Japanese team and friends since the terrible earthquake and tsunami struck on March 11, and the severe problems at Fukushima nuclear plant began. After thorough evaluation, we decided to relocate this year’s edition of the Academy, which was set to take place in Japan this fall.

A new location for the Red Bull Music Academy 2011 will be announced as of Monday, April 11. As a consequence, we have decided to extend the application period: applications will now be accepted until April 26 (date of postmark).

The dates of the workshops, October 23 to November 25, will remain the same, as will the application form and jury process. All applicants will be notified by July, whether they have been accepted to join the Academy or not.

Throughout the past months of preparation for the Tokyo Academy, we have gotten to know Japan as a country immensely rich in spirit, beauty, tradition and innovative energy. We are honoured to have been introduced to so many interesting people and to have been allowed to experience some of their creative vision. We truly admire and respect their strength and courage in the face of this terrible situation.

We at the Academy also wish to show our solidarity and support for the Japanese music makers who have been part of our journey. Hence, the Red Bull Music Academy floor at SónarSound Tokyo this weekend will go ahead as planned. All profits from the festival will be donated in support to those affected by the horrific events of March 11 and their aftermaths.

We will continue to maintain strong links with the musical and creative scene in the country, and hope to bring the full Academy experience to Japan in the not too distant future.

Will the Red Bull Music Academy 2011 be postponed?
No, the dates of the actual event will remain as previously announced. It’s just the application period that has been extended by three weeks.

So, by when do I need to hand in my application?
All applications must be sent, i.e. postmarked April 26, 2011, or earlier. Please note that, despite the postponement, there is no need to send your application on the last day.

Will there be any changes to the selection process?
No, the procedure of picking our participants, as well as the rules and regulations for applying to the Academy will remain exactly the same.

Should I still reply to the Japan-related questions (44-48) in the application form, despite the fact that the Academy is not going to happen there this year?
Yes, the whole questionnaire needs to be filled in. We want every single applicant to face the same conditions and have the same fair chance to get in.

Tanya Morgan, Che Grand & DJ Low Key rockin “And You Say” at the Billboard SXSW 2011 Showcase…

Tanya Morgan, Che Grand & myself rockin “And You Say” at the Billboard SXSW 2011 Showcase…Kinda fly with the Billboard logo, right? LOL…Full SXSW post coming soon…

Donwill’s great “Make Art” post from MCDayJob.com…

The post below is from Donwill of Tanya Morgan’s fantastic blog, MCDayJob.com, which you should definitely be checking if you’re not already.  Don posts up all sorts of stuff but catch him on the right day and you’ll get a perfect mix of clever introspection, snarky humor and emo ranting about rap.  The post below reminds me of the phrase I always use to describe what I’m lucky enough to be doing and how fortunate I feel; “15 year old me’s mind would be blown by what I do every day”.  Anyways, check out Don’s rant and whether you’re an MC, DJ, producer, musician or whatever, hopefully it’ll inspire you a little bit.

P.S. How dope are those goggles?  Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

You see that guy in the picture rapping? He had probably just played the Root’s Illadelph Halflife or Tribe’s Beats Rhyme’s and Life a few hours or days before this picture was taken and never once imagined the guys who made those records would be a phone call or email away. I bet if I could walk into this scene and inform the people in the room of what 2011 would be like they’d lose their minds.

That guy in the picture was honestly pretty damn cool. He made art because well he liked making art. Everything in his life was just making art. From the way he rolled his blunts to just being brave enough to walk around wearing Oakley ski goggles in the summer. It wasn’t about making one big epic statement. It was about making small meaningful ones consistently.

The music that this photograph captures had no idea what a blog was, didn’t care about a soundscan report, wasn’t thinking about a budget and sure as hell wasn’t worried about a cosign. The only thing the music you see in this picture cared about was what word came next and how it made the person making it feel.

Make art. Make it consistent and make it personal. Make it urgent. Share it and know that whether people loved or hated it the most important thing is that they were not indifferent towards it.

*ask ilyas, i rolled the best blunts in the world. hands down
**rocking goggles was the shit, whether or not you agree

UPDATE: The Red Bull Music Academy 2011 will not be held in Tokyo. The new location to be announced April 11. Also, application deadline extended to 4/26.

REMINDER: The application deadline is Monday, 4/4.  Your application needs to be postmarked April 4th and I’m gonna go ahead and post the link to the 24 hour post office (7500 E. 53rd Place) for anyone ends up cutting it extra close now, I know a few people who needed it last year…LOL. Also, if you personally get me your application by Sunday, 4/3 we’ll pay to mail it to Europe (the headquarters of the Academy) on your behalf.

Everything below is a repost from February, but I wanna make sure Colorado (and the everyone else) knows about this great opportunity.  Anyone with questions please hit me up at justin[at]redbullmusicacademy{dot}com.

In their own words, “The Red Bull Music Academy brings talented souls from around the globe together to make music and swap wisdom.  For the past 12 years, the Red Bull Music Academy has been traveling the world, to give music makers of all stripes a whopping dose of creative inspiration: two weeks of recording sessions, workshops, lectures by musical luminaries, and unforgettable late night jams. This year, the destination is Tokyo, and all producers, vocalists, DJs, and instrumentalists are invited to apply. The only necessary requirement? Drive.”

With that philosophy, the Red Bull Music Academy has accumulated an unprecedented wealth of music knowledge, fostered a long list of unexpected collaborations and built a storied history of lecturers and participants.  Over the last four years I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in the Red Bull Music Academy as Colorado’s sole representative.  With that said, I’ll be running an info session for locals interested in the program with a very special guest or two in March, throwing an On The Floor event that’ll end up on RedBullMusicAcademyRadio.com and, most importantly, answering any questions you might have about the program itself and helping local musicians/DJs/vocalists/producers/etc complete everything for their applications.

So whether you’re in Colorado or not, feel free to hit me up with any questions about the program at justin[at]redbullmusicacademy{dot}com and I’ll be happy to help clarify how things work.  You can also find more info at facebook.com/RedBullMusicAcademy, at twitter.com/RBMA & the downloadable info booklet below.  Then from there, download the application form, grab a snack and give yourself a big chunk of time to get started filling it out (think of it as a musical scholarship application; because like all things especially worthwhile, it’s going to take some effort).

Last but not least, here’s links to a dozen of my favorite in-depth lectures featured at RedBullMusicAcademy.com to give you a taste of how deep the learning goes, check out the site for hundreds more and RedBullMusicAcademyRadio.com for thousands of podcasts, live shows, interviews & more.

Monday, 3/14 -> Red Bull Music Academy presents The Foreign Exchange (Phonte + Nicolay) and DJ Low Key at Summit Music Hall…

MONDAY, 3/14 -> I’m ridiculously proud and excited that this show is happening.  I’ve been a huge fan and supporter of Nicolay, Phonte and the whole Foreign Exchange Music since they first all linked up on Okayplayer’s infamous message board, the Lesson (right around the same time as Tanya Morgan actually, if you don’t know the story, catch up here), and I’ve wanted to get them out to Denver for a proper show for years.  However, them traveling with a full band makes for a pricey show and up until this year, I wasn’t quite sure how to to make it happen.  Then, 2011 came and with it, came the return of the Red Bull Music Academy, the esteemed music program that I’m fortunate to work with as Denver’s sole rep and also a program that has featured both Phonte and Nicolay as guest lecturers (check them here and here).  From there, we just connected the dots and last Friday inked the paperwork to make it official; Grammy-nominated group, The Foreign Exchange, is making their Denver debut at Summit Music Hall on Monday, 3/14, courtesy of the one and only Red Bull Music Academy.

As if that wasn’t enough, the Red Bull Music Academy is blessing the first 100 people to RSVP at RBMA[at]DenverSolution{dot}com with complimentary admission to the show and keeping the ticket prices for everyone else at the low, low price of only $10 (normally an FE show cost $25+ for a ticket).  The Foreign Exchange is amazing, the tickets are a steal and you already know I’m gonna come correct on the opening set; don’t miss it!!!  All ages /// Doors at 8 (this is not the event to show up late to) /// 1902 Blake St /// RedBullMusicAcademy.com for more info on the program (especially musicians, producers, vocalists, etc) /// The event will also be recorded for RedBullMusicAcademyRadio.com /// $10 Pre-sales available at SodaJerkPresents.com.
