Friday, 5/28 -> The Solution w/DJ Low Key & Sounds Supreme moves to Bar Standard’s patio for the Summer!!! Plus, giveaways from Akomplice, Frank151 & more…

FRIDAY, 5/28 ->  Memorial Day is right around the corner and that means that it’s almost officially (drums please!!!) Summertime.  And every Denver hip hop head knows that Summer in Denver isn’t complete without the Solution crushing some dope patio.  This year is no different.  Starting on 5/28, the Solution will be rocking outside on Bar Standard’s BEAUTIFUL patio (it’s quite an upgrade from the Buddha’s rooftop, Blu said it reminded him of the infamous Do-Over when we first brought him out).  The forecast is in the 80s, we’ve got giveaways from Akomplice to get your gear game up, copies of the new Frank151, $3 Absolut drinks, $2 PBRs and you know the music’s gonna be on point at the best club in Denver (c) Westword , don’t miss it.  21+ / doors at 9 / Free until 11, only $5 after.

5/15 in Boulder & 5/16 in Denver -> Catch me DJing for U-N-I alongside Reflection Eternal at the Fox & Bluebird…

SATURDAY, 5/15 in Boulder & SUNDAY, 5/16 in Denver -> Catch me DJing for one of my favorite groups out, LA’s own U-N-I, at the Fox Theatre & the Bluebird.  They’re on tour with Talib Kweli & DJ Hi-Tek as a late addition to the Reflection Eternal – Revolutions Per Minute tour and they hit me up to DJ for their Colorado shows (obviously I said yes…LOL).  The shows should be crazy and I think there’s still a few tickets left.  I wouldn’t wait too long though, I’m guessing both shows will sell out.  P.S.  I’ll be splitting time on Sunday between Hapa Life and the show, so if you can’t make it to the show, definitely still come see me at Hapa in Cherry Creek.

Denver/Boulder feature in the Source from December ’97…#COHipHop history…

I don’t know a lot about how it was received then, but I always considered this feature from the Source to be a little piece of #COHipHop history.  I remember being geeked to see the Colorado hip hop scene being featured in the #1 hip hop magazine of the time, even if it was just a page.  I used to have this pinned up on my wall as a freshman in high school, alongside record covers, concert flyers and promo posters (you can see the holes from when I pinned it up…LOL).   It’s crazy how life plays out, in 2010 I know a lot of these people personally.  Anyways, I figured some of the Denver and Boulder heads would like to check this out, it’s good to know your history.

Friday, 5/14 -> Special guests U-N-I + Family Affair Pop Up Shop #1 at the Solution w/DJ Low Key & Sounds Supreme…

FRIDAY, 5/14 ->  We’ve got a great last minute surprise for y’all,  LA’s own Y-O & Thurzday aka U-N-I aka the hosts of DJ Low Key & Sounds Supreme – The Solution Tape #1 will be rockin live at the Solution at Bar Standard (1037 Broadway).  And if that wasn’t enough, we’re still gonna charge the regular door because we love you (free until 11, only $5 after, it doesn’t get much better than that, right?).  But wait, it gets better, Family Affair is taking the night to another level by creating a one night only, pop up shop featuring fresh new gear from Undefeated, Diamond Supply Co., The Hundreds, Kid Robot, 10 Deep, Stussy & more, plus a special sale with $15 tees & $50 hoodies and copies of the Solution Tape #1 signed by U-N-I with every purchase.  21+ / doors at 9 / Free until 11, only $5 after.

Best Drunken Twitter Rant I’ve Ever Read (c) DJ Petey…Rappers, please read…

Some grade A ranting, spotted over at djpetey.com -> First off, a disclaimer:  I cant take credit for writing this.   This was a series of twitter posts from @DJBriG.  I just feel the need to re-post it here out of fear that it might get lost in shuffle of late night, drunken, twitter ramblings.  Here is what the man had to say…..

“U rap idiots are too stupid to realize that country music took ur spot at top 40 radio. All u do is win at urban radio and ur careers are over in a year. Why? Cus country music gives people an emotional attachment that hip hop lost with ur played out drug raps. We’ve heard the d-boy story 100 times before u idiots. And most ya’ll aint really d-boys and we know it. People wanna hear music that they can emotionally attach to. 90’s rap did that. It was poetry. O Let’s Do It is not poetry. Southern rap only works in the clubs. Its nothing that people wanna buy. 2pac made club hits, but he sold cus of records like dear mama. Biggie had Juicy. They were emotional. U could connect. U assholes hated on 808’s and Heartbreak, but it sold cus people could relate to his pain. There was emotional attachment to his lyrics. Excuse me while I go in. “Black music” has been the highlight of music in this country. There is no race in america that can claim that they’ve made better music. But in the last few years “black music” has lost its way. The innovation is gone. Seriously, does everything have to be 75 bpm and have drake on the hook and talk about ur money? We bought music cus we heard stories about the struggle. We tried to relate our blue collar lives to it. We understood. And these old dudes do have long careers. Fuckin jeru is overseas every week getting euro money. He aint had a hit in 15 years. U think dem franchize boys are going to germany in 2016. Get the fuck outta here. And its all about getting a groundswell of support. Raheem devaughn had a great album, but where was the chatter. And the saddest thing is that most the great rappers are fucken lazy. Jay electronica could be the next nas but dude is lazy as fuck. And to be more of a bum ass lazy dude than nas is, is something to be said. And can we please give up on red cafe on the east coast. Dude is like 48 and never broke. Its over my dude. Red cafe is jim jones with less marketing sense. All I’m asking for is innovation. As a white kid who grew up with black music, I’m sad to see what its become. Innovation + emotion = great music. And now I’m stuck with white hipster kids who grew up on real hip hop and tweaked it into their own shit to listen to. And those kids get booked all aroud the world while waka flocka is happy with 1500 kids in fucking mobile. Can @kurupt_gotti get some backing out west? Dude is top 10 rappers of all time and nobody notices. I just want something with some soul. Something @themegatrondon would sample, but new. And ny is so damn soft so I doubt its gonna come from here. I live in Bucktown, home of the origoo gun clappers. But we’re in a recession, isn’t this the time when great music is made. When people are fucked up? Where’s flint, michigan. I know u guys don’t drive benzs. I know ur broke. Where’s that real heart. where’s the truth that folks can relate to? Biggie never rapped about how much money he had til he was rich. He rapped about the struggle. We related. We were all fucked up in’ 94. And if its not about the struggle, at least make it happy. And good happy, not dirty sex happy that I don’t want my little cousins to hear. R&B has bee lost for 10 years. Everything is sex, sex, sex. U know why country music kicks the shit outta hip hop on the charts, cus its only about love and heartbreak. Raw emotion. That’s enough for tonight. Thank u to jameson irish whiskey and marlboro for sponsoring this rant.”

I’m nominated again for “Best Hip Hop DJ” in the Westword Music Showcase…Please vote Low Key…

I’m a little late in posting this, but me and my Solution partner, Sounds Supreme, were recently nominated for “Best Hip Hop DJ” in the 2010 Westword Music Showcase.   It’s not the first time for either of us (I even won in ’08, thanks again Denver) but it’s always an honor in itself to be nominated.  With that said, vote Low Key or vote Sounds Supreme or vote for your other favorite DJ instead of us, but please just take a quick 2 minutes and vote for your favorite Denver acts over at Westword.com .  Shouts to the nominating committee and all of our supporters, here’s a little more info on the committee who nominated us (alongside Chonz, Cysko Rokwel, Vajra & K Tone) in Westword’s words:

We took greater care than ever before to ensure that we received input from an every facet of the scene. To that end, we reached out to bloggers, critics, radio programmers and personalities, promoters, club owners, booking agents, past nominees and even readers/fans, enlisting all of them to serve on this year’s nominating committee panel.

Friday, 4/23 -> Guru Tribute at the Solution, hosted by Ro Blvd + Sounds Supreme’s return + Boon Doc’s birthday party…

FRIDAY, 4/23 -> As I’m sure you already know, hip hop lost a legend when Guru of Gang Starr succumbed to complications from multiple myeloma earlier this week. Guru’s music has been a huge influence on both me & Sounds Supreme and when we heard the news, we knew that we need to push back our initial plans for this Friday (Chicken & Waffles will be next Friday, 3/30) at the Solution and dedicate the night to Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal.  You know the man, you know the music, please join us as we celebrate the life and music of Keith Elam.

Plus, Sounds Supreme is finally back from 5 weeks of DJing on a cruise ship and now we have a “Best Club Night in Denver” award to celebrate. As if that wasn’t enough, ridiculously talented producer Ro Blvd (of A Love Supreme and The Solution Tape #1 fame) will be out from LA to host the event and we’re celebrating the birthday of the reigning Denver Big Tune champion Boon Doc as well (speaking of Ro Blvd & Boon Doc, they’ll both be featured in a Big Tune production workshop on 4/25. If you’re a producer, hit up questions[at]djlowkey.com for more info). Bar Standard (1037 Broadway) / 21+ / Doors at 9 / Free until 11, only $5 after.
